Packing an extension for chrome

Under chrome://extensions/ when in developer mode. You can pack and extension. This creates a pem key file and a crx file. The crx file is the packed extension.

You do need to keep the pem file save if you want to update the extension. Altough you can delete this from the root directory of the project.
