What is a ramsar site?
A Ramsar Site is a wetland of international importance, designated under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO. This treaty aims for the conservation and sustainable use of all wetlands to contribute to global sustainable development. The term “Ramsar” is derived from the Iranian city of Ramsar, where the convention was signed. These sites include a variety of natural and man-made wetland types, providing vital habitats for numerous species, regulating water flow, and helping in carbon capture and storage, among other ecological benefits.
