What is a pingo?

A pingo is a mound of earth-covered ice found in the Arctic and subarctic regions that results from frost heaving, or the upthrust of freezing groundwater. Formed in permafrost conditions during the last Ice Age, pingos can reach up to 70 meters in height and 600 meters in diameter. When a pingo collapses, it leaves a distinctive, shallow, crater-like formation. These unique geological features are a key point of interest in certain sites of scientific study.
